Press brake technology explained

Understand what controls every bend.

A modern press brake is a coordinated system of force, motion, positioning, tooling and safety. This guide explains how the major functions work—and when advanced options add real production value.

The bending cycle

Five systems turn a drawing into a formed part.

The machine must position the sheet, apply controlled force and compensate for material behavior through every bend.

  1. 01

    Program

The CNC calculates bend sequence, ram depth, gauge position and corrections.

  2. 02

    Position

The backgauge moves the fingers to establish flange depth and part location.

  3. 03

    Form

The ram brings the punch into the die and applies the programmed bending force.

  4. 04

    Compensate

Crowning and angle systems correct machine and material deflection.

  5. 05

    Repeat

The control advances through the sequence with repeatable axis positions.

Drive & motion systems

Three ways to create controlled bending force.

The correct drive depends on force, working length, cycle speed, energy priorities and the intended production mix.

E

Full-electric ball screw

Servo motors drive precision ball-screw mechanisms for responsive, oil-free ram motion in compact precision applications.

H

Servo-hydraulic hybrid

A servo motor controls hydraulic delivery on demand, retaining hydraulic force while reducing unnecessary pump operation, heat and noise.

R

Rexroth hydraulic systems

Application-matched valve- or pump-controlled hydraulics provide repeatable force across broad tonnage, daylight and working-length requirements.

CNC control

The operator’s view of the entire machine.

BENDRYX uses ESA S840 W as the standard control platform, with Delem DA-series options available by configuration.

Axis coordination

The CNC synchronizes Y1/Y2 ram motion with X, R, Z and other positioning axes in each bend step.

Angle accuracy

Correct for the material, not just the program.

Thickness, grain direction, tensile strength and springback can change the resulting angle. Measurement and compensation options help the machine respond to those real-world variables.

  • Mechanical or CNC crowning compensates bed and ram deflection.
  • Laser angle measurement checks the part during forming.
  • Automatic correction updates ram depth for subsequent bends.
  • Tool and material libraries improve repeatability between jobs.

Safety & automation

DSP laser finger guarding at the point of operation.

DSP laser guarding places a visible detection field near the punch to help protect the operator fingers fingers while supporting productive loading and bending workflows.

  • Safety selection depends on tooling geometry and machine speed.
  • Guards must support practical loading and unloading.
  • BENDRYX coordinates final UL and CSA field inspections before production release.

Automation and handling

Extend the press brake beyond the operator station.

Sheet followers, robotic loading, automatic tool changes and connected production data can reduce handling effort and improve repeatability.

  • Front sheet followers support long or flexible workpieces.
  • Robotic cells automate picking, bending, regripping and stacking.
  • Offline programming keeps machine time focused on production.
  • Automation is engineered around the part family and takt time.
